Lochranza Castle , Whiting Bay Primary

Dating from the 12/13th century and originally built to the design of a Medieval Hall house, the walls of Lochranza Castle now reveal the changes that were made as the occupants responded to increased military threats in the 16th century. The School examined evidence of doors and windows moved, or seal up and features of fortifications added to its defensive capacity. The importance of lime mortar in binding stones to raise walls and battlements was also highlighted by visiting and learning about the lime caves and kilns located above the village of Corrie.
